Bonsai Soil Blend – Indoor & Deciduous Trees
Give container-grown trees a stable and breathable foundation with the Maya Growing Mediums Bonsai Soil Blend. Made in North Vancouver, this peat-moss-free mix is formulated for indoor bonsai and temperate deciduous bonsai grown in shallow containers.
Calcined clay, pumice, charcoal and fir bark create a structured growing medium that supports drainage, root aeration and controlled moisture retention. The mix is designed to resist rapid compaction and maintain the open root environment needed for bonsai training and long-term container growth.
Structured Bonsai Soil for Shallow Pots
Bonsai trees grow in relatively small and shallow containers, which means their root systems have limited access to water, oxygen and growing space. A suitable bonsai soil must drain efficiently while retaining enough moisture to prevent the roots from drying excessively between waterings.
Maya’s Bonsai Blend combines mineral and organic components to create a structured growing medium. Calcined clay and pumice help maintain drainage and airflow, while bark, charcoal and Maya General Mix provide organic structure and measured moisture retention.
Controlled Drainage
Pumice and calcined clay help excess water move through shallow bonsai containers.
Stable Structure
Mineral particles and bark help the growing medium retain its structure instead of compacting quickly.
Root Aeration
Open spaces within the mix allow oxygen to circulate around developing bonsai roots.

How to Repot a Bonsai
- Confirm that it is the appropriate season to repot your particular bonsai species.
- Carefully remove the tree from its container.
- Gently remove deteriorated old soil and inspect the root system.
- Trim roots only as appropriate for the tree’s species, health and stage of development.
- Add fresh Maya Bonsai Soil and position the tree securely in its container.
- Work the mixture carefully around the roots without crushing its structural components.
- Water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain.
- Place the tree in conditions appropriate for post-repotting recovery.
Maya recommends repotting approximately every one to two years or as needed. The proper schedule depends on the tree’s age, species, growth rate, root development and container size.
Available Size
- 3 litres: Approximately five 4-inch nursery pots or one 6-inch nursery pot.

Bonsai Soil FAQ
Can I use regular potting soil for bonsai?
Conventional potting soil can become too dense or moisture-retentive for a shallow bonsai container. A structured bonsai mix is designed to provide more controlled drainage and airflow around the roots.
Is this soil suitable for Ficus bonsai?
Yes. Maya identifies Ficus as one of the indoor bonsai types suited to this blend.
Can I use it for Japanese maple bonsai?
Maya recommends the blend for temperate deciduous bonsai such as Japanese maple, elm and beech. Watering and seasonal care should still be adjusted for the individual tree.
Is this bonsai soil peat-free?
Yes. Maya describes its Bonsai Blend as a peat-moss-free growing medium.
Does bonsai soil contain nutrients?
This formula contains Maya General Mix as one of its components, but fertilization should still be managed according to the species, season and stage of development.
